Saferworld is governed by a board of trustees, which also oversees the work of the executive director and executive management team, who report on performance against strategic and operational plans. The board meets four times a year.
The executive management team, consisting of the executive director and the directors of international programmes, policy and communications, and finance, also meet regularly to review progress against Saferworld’s ten year strategy and annual plans.
It is great to hear that you would like to make a donation to us. You can become a regular supporter or make a one-off donation. Your gift will help us in our work to prevent violent conflict and create safer communities. You can donate here.
You can also remember Saferworld in your will. Building peace in countries torn apart by violent conflict is a long process – one that is achievable through dedication and patience. Remembering Saferworld in your will is a great way to help us create safer communities and prevent violent conflict for years to come.
If you do not already have a will, a solicitor can help you ensure that your wishes are carried out. Because charities are exempt from inheritance tax, all of your gift to Saferworld will go towards supporting our work.
Your donation will be used as an important contribution to support Saferworld’s work to prevent violent conflict and build safer lives across the countries where we work. We are part of the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI), which means that all of our expenditure is open to scrutiny by donors and the public. By visiting the IATI registry, you can find out more about the overall costs of our projects.
Regular giving means that donors commit to a donation amount that is paid regularly. This is often on a monthly basis but could also be bi-monthly or quarterly. Regular giving is usually arranged through a direct debit or standing order, which provides instructions to your bank to send a set amount to Saferworld at regular intervals. These are set up and managed by you and can be cancelled at any time. Regular giving is an important source of income for Saferworld, allowing us to plan ahead and develop innovative programming with a reliable and predictable source of income. In ever-changing and complex conflict environments, this flexibility is invaluable to ensuring our programmes contribute to lasting change.
No, individuals cannot make a donation to a specific project or country. When you donate to Saferworld – either through regular giving or a single donation – we allocate your gift to our general funding pool, which allows us the flexibility to develop programmes and respond to situations quickly and effectively. The contexts we work in change quickly, so this flexible funding helps us adapt and focus our efforts where the need is greatest and where we can make the biggest difference.
Saferworld strives to keep administration costs as low as possible and last year (2018-2019) 88 per cent of our income went directly to our policy and programmatic work around the world.
We use PayPal to process our online donations. PayPal is a trusted service used by millions of people around the world, using SSL technology to keep your information safe. Saferworld also encrypts all personal information that you provide when you use your card online.
Saferworld strives to be as accountable as possible to the people we support, our partners, trustees and donors. Financial information on donations and grants is posted on our website and in our annual review and the annual audited report that can be downloaded from the Charity Commission’s website. We also regularly evaluate the impact that our projects and programmes make as part of our arrangement with our donors, and undertake regular quality reviews of our publications and selected programmes.
Non-governmental organisations like Saferworld need to pay core costs to keep things running. These costs fall outside of specific projects, and help ensure continuity and the growth of the organisation. This can include the development of long-term strategies, learning, and monitoring as well as funding, finance and communications. It also covers more practical costs such as office rent and IT equipment that enable us to do our work.
Audited information about Saferworld’s activities, account statements and annual reports is published on our website as well as on the International Aid Transparency Initiative website here. You can also sign up to receive our newsletter here.
Your donation qualifies for Gift Aid if you pay tax in the United Kingdom and have signed the Gift Aid declaration when you donate. Every £1 that you donate with Gift Aid is worth £1.25 for basic rate taxpayers, at no extra cost to you.
Gift Aid is a United Kingdom giving scheme introduced by the Inland Revenue and is one of the simplest and most effective ways of giving to charity. It allows us to reclaim from your donation the basic rate tax you pay as a taxpayer in the United Kingdom. Currently that is an additional 25p for every £1 – so a donation of £10 could mean we receive £12.50 at no extra cost to you. If you are a higher rate taxpayer you are also able to reclaim the additional difference yourself through your tax return, or you may choose to donate it back to Saferworld by completing the information on your form. All you have to do is remember to include details of your charitable gifts on your tax form. For further information, contact Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs directly by calling their Gift Aid helpline on 0151 472 6038 or visit hmrc.gov.uk
